Amethyst is commonly mined in Brazil and Uruguay, but can be found on all continents.
Mohs Hardness Scale: 7
There are many varieties of amethyst:
- Dream amethyst is a mixture of purple amethyst and a milky colored quartz arranged in a chevron pattern. Alternatively this form of amethyst is referred to as "Banded", "Chevron" or "Dogtooth" Amethyst.
- Pink Amethyst is a variety of amethyst from Argentina. Like its namesake suggests, pink amethyst is a deep pink to lilac color that occurs when hematite mixes in the amethyst as it forms.
- Moss Amethyst is a combination of purple amethyst mixed with moss agate. The moss agate creates thin vein looking threads and branches within the stone.
- Ametrine is a combination of Citrine and purple Amethyst. While in the earth, the amethyst is heated up by environmental factors, and causes the purple amethyst to change in color to yellow. This process can be manually replicated, and often will create a more demarcated line between the two colors.
- Green Amethyst, also known as Prasiolite, is a very pale green variety of quartz. This naturally occurs near purple amethyst deposits when lava flow next to the amethyst changes the color of the crystal. This is very rare.
